Then the Lord replied to Job out of the tempest and said… “Where were you when I laid the earth’s foundations? Speak if you have understanding. … Have you surveyed the expanses of the earth? If you know of these – tell Me. Which path leads to where light dwells, and where is the place of darkness… (Job 38)
This book is known to us as a tale of tremendous suffering and the centre of Biblical Theodicy, asking the question, “How can G-d allow bad things to happen to good people?” It’s a topic that (unfortunately) keeps coming up, and yet the book itself is rarely studied! Difficulties include the demanding Hebrew, unusual narrative/philosophical structure, and the challenges of translating Biblical Philosophy into modern terms.

In this four-part course, join The Academy and Rabbi Sam Thurgood in taking a journey through the book, where we attempt to understand the structure, themes, story itself – and along the way, the answers it offers us to this most challenging of questions.
